improve Capability
improve capability is one of two foundation processes of the framework. Manage change is the other.
The improve capability process oversees the engineering and reengineering of company assets to deliver the requisite capabilities.
Every organization, every organism, has abilities that define that organization or organism. Done well or good candidates for improvement, those abilities are fundamental to the enteprise that the organization undertakes. We refer to these abilities of the organization as its capability or capabilities. Much is made
Improve capability comprises four milestones or gates: define, design, develop and deploy with specific completion criteria. The process also includes four groupings of information: definitions, designs, assets and results that define the information required to accomplish the process. These provide a vocabulary for the process rather than prescribe content to be produced as the process unrolls. The milestones and information groupings are asynchronous. That is progress can be made to varying degrees on what capabilities are to be addressed and defined, the design and development of these improvements and their deployment as we move through each of the milestones. However,
this process, "improve capability" focuses on the improvement of the assets or capabilities, that is making changes to related processes, technoologies, information and roles and responsibilities that are placed in production. It works in tandem with the "manage change" process which focuses on the work, that is the programs, projects and related activities, that must be planned, organized and controlled in order to make the improvements a reality. "improve capability"Manage change is one of two foundation processes of the framework. improve capability is the other. The manage change process calls attention to the work accomplished in projects and programs, how this work affects the assets of the company and how these assets in turn deliver the desired value.
Whether directed at an entire business, an organization within a business, a collection of systems or a single application, "improve capability" ensures that additions or changes to the assets in question are made with a shared understanding of what the assets are and their purpose, and relationships the assets have with each other and with other parts of the organization.
